Seeger Rings: What You Need to Know

Seeger Rings: What You Need to Know

Seeger rings are safety components. A Seeger ring is indeed a special locking ring. Thanks to its universal application, it is possible to prevent the axial displacement of components such as wheels, bearings, sealing elements, etc., on shafts, spindles, or inside holes.

In the following paragraphs, we will discover all the details and the different types available on the market.

What are Seeger rings used for?

A Seeger ring is a safety ring, a mechanical component that serves to prevent the movement of certain elements within machines. The circumference of this ring is not complete, and at the two ends, there are holes that serve for the insertion of pliers (the ring's assembly element).

The Seeger is mounted on motor shafts and inside holes, after making a specific groove. This element serves to keep the various parts of a machine stationary and to prevent them from coming out or possibly sliding off.
In the past, Seeger rings were produced from cut and then split tubes. Today, the snap ring is made of spring steel wire and bent into a ring shape by a winding machine. The diameter can vary from a few millimeters to several meters.

What are the advantages of Seeger rings?

The main advantage of using safety rings is their ability to absorb forces acting in the direction of an axis of a rotating body. It is the ring that fixes the component and prevents its axial movement. The peculiarity of these rings is also found in their versatility.
In fact, the market offers a wide variety of rings that can provide the best solution in different cases.

In general, the two basic versions of elements are:

  • Seeger rings for shafts
  • Snap rings for holes

These basic macro categories are then available in different variants, according to DIN, UNI, ISO standards.

Different types of Seeger rings

Regarding the different types of Seeger rings, the main articles most requested and used are DIN 472 and DIN 471, rings that can transmit high axial loads between the element that exerts effort in the machine and the groove.

Below is a list of all the elements available in the catalog:

It is important to emphasize that all Seeger rings fully perform their function if mounted correctly. The element is indeed subjected to more stress during the assembly phase than during its subsequent use. That's why it is advisable to be careful, avoid damage both to the ring and the groove, and use the most suitable work tools for each product variant.

In most cases, these rings are assembled and disassembled with the aid of pliers. It is important to use the pliers suitable for each ring size, and to choose the correct one, just refer to the dimensional tables of the individual rings.
