Nord Lock and Grower Washers: What Are They For?

Nord Lock and Grower Washers: What Are They For?

Washers are a mechanical item generally placed between the nut of a bolt and the object to be locked. Their main task is to distribute the clamping load over a larger surface than that covered by a bolt or screw (a very advantageous functionality with less resistant materials like wood). Furthermore, washers serve as spacers when screws and bolts are too long.

These mechanical products appear as disks with a hole in the center. Their shape and size vary depending on the material and use, so there are specific solutions for every need. Among the most common, we find Nord-Lock washers and grower washers, but what are they for and how are they used?

Features of Nord-Lock Washers

Nord-Lock washers are a particular model of mechanical element consisting of two coupled washers. This system is usually used for bolted joints subject to strong vibrations or dynamic loads.

In technical terms, the union between a shaped washer with a washer equipped with radial teeth on the opposite side ensures better tightening and prevents the joint from loosening. For this reason, to facilitate assembly, Nord-Lock washers are supplied in pre-assembled pairs, cams against cams. Such elements allow securely locking the nut on the studs, eliminating the need for any adhesives.

Nord-Lock washers are used in various sectors such as:

  • Energy,
  • Transport,
  • Building and bridge construction,
  • Naval industry.

Among the main advantages of their application, there is the possibility of reusing the mechanical pair, obviously if the state of wear allows it and thus avoiding damaging the new joint.

Grower Washers: What Are They For and How Are They Used

Another very common model of mechanical item is the grower washer.

Grower, also known as anti-loosening washers, are the most common and economical elements capable of ensuring high safety and preventing the loosening of the joint.

The shape of a grower rosette is a split ring, with two sharp edges at the ends. When these rosettes are used, they flatten out, and the two sharp edges bind respectively to the underside of the screw or nut and the other to the surface of the support plane. Precisely because of this particular mechanism, the washer should be inserted before the bolt, thus avoiding the loosening of the connection.

For the elastic force capable of exerting, these rosettes are also called elastic washers and prevent the screw and bolt from unscrewing, thus keeping the nut in tension.

Generally produced in steel, here is a list of grower/elastic washers present in our catalog:

Split elastic washer with bent ends

Choosing the Right Washer for Your Needs

Therefore, a washer is a mechanical element used when the head of the screw or bolt is directly in contact with the material. The types of washers on the market are numerous, and the choice of the most suitable one depends on the specific needs.

For example, on an already damaged surface, it would be preferable to use a curved elastic washer. Conversely, for a better grip, the elastic washer is the solution that will ensure the best result.

Thus, the most suitable washer is the result of a series of variables (e.g., the material of the object, application, size, etc.) to be evaluated from time to time.
