A thread gauge is a measuring tool, consisting of a series of stamped metal blades that are used to determine the pitch of a thread. Due to the presence of these blades, it is sometimes also called a leaf gauge.
At the two ends of the tool, one side has blades with "male" profiles stamped on them, while the other side has "female" profiles.
Its use is very simple and intuitive. When needing to determine the threading of a particular part, simply align the male or female blade to the screw or nut until finding the one that best fits. Once the pitch is found, it will be possible to know which tap or die to use, to thread the other component or to select the counterpart to be coupled.
The choice of a thread gauge is made by considering:
- The profile of the thread to be analyzed,
- The degree of precision needed, opting for professional tools, and finally, the material with which the tool is made should be durable and robust, so that the blades do not tend to deform over time.
Once these points are considered, it will be easier to identify the item to purchase.
